What is MO.CA?


MO.CA is a cultural center based in Brescia, Italy. It aims to maintain a strong bond with the spaces it inhabits and wants to become a meeting point and reference point for all citizens, especially with the youngest. It's located on a crossroad between Via Moretto and Corso Cavour and, already in the name, intends to avoid being a simple container. Instead, it's a crossroads of multiple realities in which diversity becomes value.

In 2021, it launched a contest to redesign its logo. It was really important for the client to maintain the concept of the junction in the rebranding. This was my proposal.

Redesigning the logo


Shapes

The concept of the intersection, requested by the customer, is represented by the smaller dot, at the bottom right, which joins the two semicircles that make up the O. Inside, a second circle, larger, represents the heart of the building, its rooms, where visitors meet.

The figure of the circle was chosen for two reasons: 

  • it’s a symbol of eternity (intrinsic quality of the building itself, which over the course of history has been transformed, adapting to needs, and now becoming a guest of this activity),
  • takes up the shape of the circle already used in the previous logo, reinforcing the idea of constancy in the image of the current brand.
Pictogram and logotype

The pictogram is placed inside the logotype, becoming an integral part of it, replacing the O. In this way, it can be used as a full logotype, but also just as a pictogram in case the measurements of the support would make it necessary.

Font
The font used in the logotype is Glacial Indifference Bold, but slightly beveled at the corners to obtain a more harmonious and complementary shape with the pictogram. Below, the pay-off Centro per le nuove culture is always written in Glacial Indifference, but in this case Regular and with a kerning of 100.
The Glacial Indifference font is only available in two weights, Regular and Bold, but both free-commercial use.
Color Palette

The gradient of the logo starts from a purple, placed at the bottom, up to a warm ochre at the top. The colors are vital, bright, communicate strength and familiarity, surpassing the perhaps rigid and institutional aspect that the place could give to the youngest. In this sense, it is proposed precisely to attract the attention of students, changing its approach into soft and welcoming shapes, which the color follows accentuating its liveliness.
