Medusa

What is Medusa?

Concept

Medusa is a pilot project for an underground nightclub known for minimal electronic music.

The concept is based in the sensation of being in a painting by Esher, the emotion of isolating oneself despite being in a crowded place, the journey within oneself through the deafening environment. The name is inspired by the jellyfish's characteristic of floating in the water, of being pure electricity immersed in an immense and constantly moving environment. It is the feeling that anyone who enters the Medusa would experience: an alteration of one's perception such as to feel as if he were underwater, separated from the rest of the world; feeling the electronics flowing through his body; the hypnotic rhythm that pushes him to abandon himself to dance.

Architecture

The Medusa ranges from extremely bright to extremely dark environments. The architecture is minimal and geometric, the colors only black and white, the color given only by the strobe lights. Loud, electronic, aseptic music. The interiors are built on optical illusions created on plays of light and shadow, solids and voids, drawings or on the points of view of the observer. The atmosphere, given by the music and the environment, is therefore decidedly disorienting, hypnotic, dissociative.

Brand Strategy

The Medusa is an extremely particular and alternative place, intended for a very specific target. It is therefore not in competition with the clientele of other establishments, but differs in the exclusivity of the experience it offers. However, this does not preclude it from the general clientele: some can go there for taste, and some for curiosity. Architecture in this sense plays a key point in its competitiveness on the market. It is not a place that tends to appear, but more to hide, similar to a speakeasy. Use customers, and not communication, to promote itsself (see Business Card). On an advertising level, he uses illustrations or photomontages in flyers, mock-ups and in his social being, where black plays a decisive role and where geometry is always present, to recall the environment of the venue itself. Its strengths are therefore the originality and uniqueness of the environment, music and communication.

Medusa: the Brand

Logo

Each pictogram has been hand-drawn and designed on a 6x6cm starting grid, where shapes taken from optical illusions and alchemical symbols have been combined. The idea was to create a simple and geometric logo, easily recognizable both on a small and large scale.
The search for the font was based on recalling the pictogram in the shapes and in the concept of linear and geometric. After evaluating various options, Artypa was choosed for the logotype. Anyway, changes were then made in the U to make it more consistent overall with the other letters. As secondary font, Swansea was the better option for his clean look and readable quality, which could be used for the pay-off or for future advertisement.

Medusa: Promotion

Business Card

Medusa's business card follows the shape of a smartphone. It's one centimeter less wide than the standard size of Italian business cards to maintain the proportions of the basic design of a mobile phone. It's made of polyshrink, a transparent opaque printable material. The interior (in gray in the graphic transposition) is transparent.
Invite those who come to Medusa, to share images and videos of the club through social networks. There is therefore an intention of indirect advertising: that it is not the club as such that promotes itself, but that it's the clientele itself that does so.

Coasters

I based the idea of Medusa's coasters on Escher's patterns.
On the front, it's printed an impossible figure built on an isometric grid. On the back, it's printed the white pictogram on a black background. Their hexagonal silhouette not only recall the shape of the logo, but it has also a compositional function: placed one attached to the other, they can form a mosaic geometrically. They're made in PVC and come in three colors: cyan, magenta and yellow.

Poster and flyers

I've designed every flyer to have a really impactful image on the front with the less text possible to draw attention, while all the informations are on the back. With this approach, the costumers can collect them and hang up them on the walls of their houses as if they were prints. It's always present a geometric pattern or elements in each design, to create a generic style that reminds the enviroment of Medusa club itself.

Are you sure that a floor cannot also be a ceiling? Are you absolutely certain that you go up when you walk up a staircase?
